Houthi rebels seize strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait locations

Houthi rebels have seized strategic locations near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, threatening one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints. Following the capture of the port city of Mokha, Houthi forces successfully occupied Perim Island, a volcanic island located just 3.5 kilometers from the Yemeni coast that directly overlooks the strait.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a vital artery for global trade, facilitating approximately 7% to 12% of global maritime cargo and a significant portion of the world's oil trade. Control of this area poses a direct threat to the energy security of Gulf nations, particularly Saudi Arabia, and could force global shipping companies to reroute vessels around the Cape of Good Hope, significantly increasing freight costs and transit times.

In response to the Houthi advance, Saudi Arabia has launched airstrikes targeting the Mokha airport. The Yemeni government has condemned the attacks and vowed to respond to security threats. Meanwhile, Iran has called for an end to the blockade on Yemen and urged a return to negotiations, while regional reports suggest the Houthi operations are being conducted under the guidance of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
