Houthi rebels seize Mocha port, expanding control over Bab el-Mandeb

Houthi rebels have seized the strategic port city of Mocha on Yemen’s western coast, significantly expanding their control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This maritime chokepoint is vital for global trade, facilitating approximately 10-12 percent of international shipping. The takeover follows intense fighting that forced internationally recognized government troops to retreat.

Reports from Yemeni government and regional sources indicate that the Houthi advance was directly guided by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Specifically, military sources believe Abdolreza Shahlaei, a senior IRGC Quds Force commander, has been overseeing the operations. Iranian sources have acknowledged meetings with allies but maintain that the decision to capture Mocha was made independently by the Houthis.

In addition to Mocha, Houthi forces have reportedly seized Zuqar Island and deployed to the Hanish Islands following the withdrawal of government naval troops. Fighters have also been reported on Perim Island. These movements bring Houthi military presence closer to critical shipping lanes, heightening concerns regarding global energy supplies and maritime security in the Red Sea.
