Houthi rebels seize Mocha and Mayun Island in Bab el-Mandeb FAST-MOVING
Houthi rebels have achieved significant territorial gains along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, seizing the strategic port city of Mocha and several key islands, including Mayun (Perim) and Zuqar. The capture of Mayun Island is particularly critical as it sits in the middle of the Bab el-Mandeb strait, effectively granting the group control over the narrow waterway that divides the strait into two channels.
Following the fall of Mocha, Yemeni government forces have reportedly retreated toward Dhubab and the Lahj governorate. The Houthi advance has also reached the coastal town of Dhubab. In response to the escalation, Saudi Arabia has conducted airstrikes targeting the Mocha airport, though immediate damage reports were limited.
The military shift has raised intense international concern regarding the security of global maritime trade. Control over these chokepoints allows the Houthis to more easily threaten commercial shipping and energy tankers passing through the Red Sea toward the Suez Canal. This instability has contributed to fluctuations in global oil prices, with Brent crude reaching levels above $100 per barrel.
UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg has warned that the conflict is entering a “new and more dangerous phase.” While Houthi officials claim that international navigation remains safe for non-Saudi vessels, the strategic shift places immense pressure on global energy corridors and regional security.
