Houthis escalate Yemen conflict with attacks on Mocha port and Red Sea shipping
The conflict in Yemen has seen a significant escalation, marked by a series of Houthi missile and drone attacks targeting government-held areas and strategic infrastructure. A major assault on the port city of Mocha (al-Makha) resulted in at least seven deaths—including four military personnel and three civilians—and approximately 30 injuries. The strikes caused extensive damage to the port’s docks, customs buildings, staff housing, and fuel storage facilities. Yemeni air defense units reported intercepting 11 Houthi drones during the operation.
In addition to the attacks on Mocha, Houthi drone strikes killed two soldiers in Shabwa province near the Marib border. Maritime security has also been impacted; a Tanzania-flagged cargo ship, the Tihamah, was struck in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, resulting in the deaths of three crew members, including two Pakistanis and one Indonesian.
The current surge in violence follows a period of relative calm after a 2022 truce and appears to have been triggered by July airstrikes in Sanaa intended to prevent the landing of an Iranian aircraft. Analysts suggest the Houthis, backed by Iran, feel emboldened by regional dynamics. The Houthis have also declared a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabian shipping in the Red Sea. In response, the Yemeni government has vowed to continue military operations to restore stability, while repair efforts have begun at the Mocha port to resume essential trade operations.
