Bab el-Mandeb Strait: Houthi advances threaten Saudi oil exports
The Houthi movement has expanded its control over Yemen's west coast, seizing the port of Mocha and the strategic Perim island. This advance places the movement in control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical maritime chokepoint through which approximately 12 percent of global trade passes.
In response to the escalating situation, Houthi politburo member Mohamed al-Bukhaiti stated that the movement intends to spare most international shipping from targeting, with the sole exception of Saudi Arabia. He characterized the operations as an effort to ensure freedom of navigation rather than a blockade of the strait.
The regional instability is causing significant economic and logistical pressures. Saudi Arabia's oil exports, which are vital to its economy and largely destined for Asian markets, face serious disruption. In the maritime insurance sector, war-risk premiums for the strait have held near 3 percent of vessel value, while political violence and terrorism coverage is approaching 10 percent for higher-risk policies. These rising costs and the threat of delays are impacting global supply chains and increasing the risk of inflation for imported goods.
