Houthi drone strike hits Medina power station serving Prophet's Mosque

A Saudi-led coalition has accused the Iran-aligned Houthi movement of launching a drone attack against the Taibah power distribution station in Medina. The strike, which occurred on Tuesday, September 29, damaged one transformer, but officials stated that the wider electricity network remained functional and no major power outages or casualties were reported.

The targeted facility provides electricity to the area surrounding the Prophet's Mosque, one of Islam's holiest sites. The coalition stated that an investigation and analysis of drone wreckage confirmed Houthi responsibility and suggested the attack was a deliberate attempt to provoke the Muslim world by targeting religious landmarks.

Houthi military sources have denied the allegations, labeling them as lies intended to cover up Saudi failures regarding previous security incidents. This escalation marks a significant increase in hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis since the UN-brokered truce in 2022.
