Yemen faces a heightened risk of returning to large-scale warfare following a surge in hostilities between the internationally recognized government and Houthi rebels. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg warned that the country is at its greatest danger of renewed major conflict since the 2022 truce.

Recent military escalations include the Yemeni government conducting 133 operations against Houthi positions in a 24-hour period using drones, artillery, and rockets. Simultaneously, Houthi forces have intensified attacks on Saudi Arabian interests and maritime security. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for striking a Saudi military landing ship and four escort vessels in the Red Sea near Mocha. Additionally, Houthi rebels reportedly used drones to target an Aramco refinery in Jizan, Saudi Arabia.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has called for an immediate de-escalation to prevent further humanitarian catastrophe. The fighting has spread across multiple provinces, including Marib, Taiz, and Hodeidah, as the informal period of calm continues to erode.
