Saudi Arabia proposes two-week ceasefire and direct talks with Houthis
Saudi Arabia has proposed a two-week ceasefire to the Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) through an Omani mediator. The proposal includes direct negotiations to address humanitarian needs, with the goal of reaching a comprehensive agreement by the end of the truce period. As part of this initiative, Riyadh has expressed readiness to lift the blockade on Yemen and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid.
Despite the proposal, Ansar Allah has not shown enthusiasm, maintaining that they seek a final, comprehensive solution to the conflict. Their demands include the total end of all air, land, and sea blockades, the complete military, security, and political withdrawal of Saudi forces from Yemen, and the establishment of a fund to compensate for damages caused to Yemeni infrastructure and cities.
This diplomatic push follows a period of heightened tension and strategic shifts, including the Houthi seizure of key areas along the Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb strait. Concurrently, Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to defending Saudi Arabia and its holy cities under the Mecca Agreement. Meanwhile, reports indicate that China has privately urged Iran to help restrain Houthi actions to protect regional energy routes.
