Taiz: Yemeni government forces repel major Houthi offensive

Yemeni government forces are currently repelling a major offensive by Houthi rebels in the Taiz governorate. The fighting, described by military officials as one of the most significant in years, has involved attacks across approximately 56 flashpoints in the province.

Government officials report that at least 30 Houthi fighters were killed and 50 others injured during recent clashes. Despite intense Houthi ground assaults and heavy mortar fire, government troops and local resistance fighters have managed to hold their positions. Air strikes and drone operations have also been utilized to target Houthi reinforcements and equipment.

In an attempt to isolate the province, Houthi fighters reportedly destroyed a culvert on the Hayjat Al-Abd road, a critical supply route connecting Taiz to the southern city of Aden. While the Houthi rebels recently captured parts of the Red Sea coast, air strikes and difficult terrain have so far prevented them from achieving a wider breakthrough.

Following a call for general mobilization by Presidential Leadership Council head Rashad al-Alimi on September 25, the government appears to be focusing on a gradual military buildup, including retraining reserve personnel and integrating civilian volunteers, rather than launching an immediate large-scale counteroffensive.
