Red Sea Houthi attacks on Saudi tankers raise regional escalation risk

The Yemeni Houthi movement, backed by Iran, has launched missile and drone strikes on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, claiming hits on two vessels on July 22 and three tankers over a 48‑hour period. The group has also threatened to block the Bab al‑Mandab Strait, a vital maritime corridor.

U.N. Secretary‑General António Guterres warned that the renewed attacks could widen the regional conflict and urged immediate de‑escalation in line with Security Council resolutions. The United Nations highlighted that around 6,000 crew members on roughly 400 vessels remain stranded in the strait.

Iran’s foreign‑ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei said the Yemen crisis cannot be solved militarily and called for a return to dialogue based on the agreed roadmap. The European Union’s naval mission Aspides raised the threat level in the southern Red Sea and Bab al‑Mandab to “high” after the July 22 incident and pledged to protect freedom of navigation. Former U.S. President Donald Trump warned he would target Yemen and Iran if Houthi attacks continued.

The escalating maritime pressure threatens global energy trade, with Saudi Aramco facilities in Jizan and Yanbu among the targets, and has drawn condemnation from regional actors.
