Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping
Overview
On 25 July 2026 the United Nations warned that a resurgence of Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Bab al‑Mandab Strait threatened regional stability and global trade, calling for an immediate halt to hostilities. Iran’s foreign ministry rejected a military solution and urged a return to dialogue.
Later that day U.S. forces disabled a Saudi‑flagged tanker after the Houthis claimed to have struck Saudi oil ships, while a U.S. missile strike in the Gulf of Oman damaged an LPG tanker and killed two crew members. Iran accused the United States of mistakenly targeting an Iranian‑registered carrier, and the United Kingdom’s maritime trade agency reported another tanker incident in the Gulf of Oman. Together, the diplomatic admonitions and active naval engagements illustrate a rapid escalation of the conflict over key maritime chokepoints.
