Houthis seize Meyun Island, raising maritime security concerns

The Houthi movement has reportedly seized control of the strategic Meyun Island and the coastal city of Dhubab, significantly increasing their influence over the Bab al-Mandab Strait. This movement provides the group with direct oversight of one of the world's most critical maritime corridors connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

International powers have expressed serious concern regarding these developments. U.S. Vice President JD Vance described the situation as “concerning” and noted that the administration is closely monitoring the shifting dynamics while maintaining contact with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and representatives of the Houthis.

Simultaneously, the Kremlin has voiced alarm, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that the situation in the Bab al-Mandab Strait is “developing out of control.” The expansion of Houthi presence in these areas threatens international navigation security and could fundamentally alter the military and security balance in the southern Red Sea.
