Houthis seize strategic Mayun Island in Bab al-Mandeb Strait
Houthi forces have seized control of Mayun Island, also known as Perim, located in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. The takeover was confirmed by both Houthi officials and senior military officials from Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
This strategic volcanic island sits at the entrance to the Red Sea, a vital corridor for global shipping and oil transit. By controlling Mayun, the Houthis have established a physical outpost in the strait, which splits the waterway into two channels. This advance follows the recent capture of the port city of Mocha and a rapid military progression across Yemen's western coast.
Analysts suggest the seizure could significantly impact the conflict with Saudi-backed forces and provide a strategic advantage to the group's backer, Iran.
