Houthis seize Yemen’s Red Sea coast and Bab al-Mandeb strait
The Houthi movement has significantly expanded its control over Yemen’s western coast, capturing the strategic port city of Mocha and the island of Mayun. This advance grants the group control over the Bab al-Mandeb strait, a vital maritime passage for global oil shipping and trade between Asia and Europe.
Yemeni government forces reported launching air strikes against Houthi vehicles and personnel near Mocha and along the Mocha-Dhubab road in an attempt to counter the advance. The loss of these coastal areas leaves the Yemeni government without direct access to the Red Sea.
In Iran, state media and officials have celebrated the Houthi victories, describing them as a “divine triumph.” Iranian leaders view the gains as increased leverage against the United States. Meanwhile, the situation has created a dilemma for the U.S. administration; while there are concerns regarding the disruption of global energy markets and shipping, President Trump has indicated a preference for providing intelligence support to regional partners rather than engaging in direct military action.
Additionally, Saudi Arabia has temporarily closed its East-West oil pipeline following a drone attack, further highlighting the regional instability caused by the escalating conflict.
