Houthis strike Saudi military sites and Red Sea vessel
Yemen’s Houthi rebels announced a series of military operations targeting Saudi Arabian assets, including a direct strike on a military transport vessel in the Red Sea. The group claimed to have used ballistic missiles and drones to strike troop concentrations, weapons depots, and command centers in the Mocha area and the Tadawin camp within the Marib Governorate. Houthi spokespersons stated the strikes were precise and resulted in dozens of casualties, including Saudi nationals.
In response, Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s internationally recognized Presidential Leadership Council, vowed that the government would ensure no Houthi action goes unanswered. Al-Alimi urged the group to cease fighting and participate in the country’s political process through elections.
The ongoing instability in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait is significantly impacting global energy logistics. Due to the increased risks to shipping, Gulf oil flows are being rerouted toward the Eastern Mediterranean. Reports indicate that flows through the Sumed pipeline have increased by 150%, reaching its maximum capacity of 2.5 million barrels per day, as tankers seek safer alternatives to the Red Sea transit routes.
