Houthi rebels escalate attacks on Saudi assets and Red Sea shipping
Yemen's Houthi rebels have significantly escalated military operations, targeting Saudi Arabian assets and commercial shipping in the Red Sea. A Houthi missile strike on the vessel Tihamah in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait resulted in the deaths of at least six people, including three Pakistani citizens.
Inland, the Houthis launched coordinated strikes using ballistic missiles and drones against Saudi-backed positions, including troop concentrations, weapons depots, and command centers in the Mocha area and the Tadawin camp in Marib Governorate. Additionally, the group reported attacking a Saudi Aramco refinery in Jazan with drones.
In response, Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council chairman, Rashad al-Alimi, vowed that the government would respond to these actions. Meanwhile, Yemeni government forces reported repelling Houthi attacks on the al-Mafalis front in Taiz province.
United Nations envoy Hans Grundberg warned that Yemen faces its most serious threat of a return to large-scale war since the 2022 truce. The humanitarian situation remains dire, with UN officials reporting that over half the population faces acute food insecurity and millions are at risk of famine.
