Mecca security alert after Saudi air defenses intercept Houthi drone FAST-MOVING
Saudi Arabia’s air defenses intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca on Tuesday evening before it could enter the city’s restricted airspace. The Saudi-led coalition spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki, described the incident as a deliberate attempt to provoke millions of Muslims, stating that the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims is a “red line.” This marks the second time a Houthi attempt to target Mecca has been reported, following a ballistic missile incident in 2017.
The Houthi movement has categorically denied targeting Mecca or any Islamic holy sites, labeling the Saudi claims as a “worn-out lie.” Houthi spokespeople maintained that their operations target Saudi military installations and oil facilities away from religious sites.
The incident has triggered widespread international condemnation. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Muslim World League denounced the potential threat to holy sites. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia, while Kuwait also condemned the attempt.
In addition to the Mecca incident, recent Houthi attacks using missiles and drones in southern and western Saudi Arabia, including Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif, have reportedly injured 13 civilians and caused damage to several homes and vehicles. Saudi authorities issued security alerts for Mecca, Jeddah, and Taif following these escalations.
