Hérault, France: Suspect Detained in Connection with July 5 Wildfire

A 27‑year‑old man was placed in pre‑trial detention on 7 July after being identified by witnesses as the suspect in a forest fire that broke out on 5 July in Carlencas‑et‑Levas, Hérault. Police found a lighter on him and he later claimed he had unintentionally ignited the blaze while trying to burn a goodbye letter to his infant daughter who had died the previous year. The fire destroyed roughly 20 hectares of vegetation and, fueled by strong winds, merged into a larger blaze that scorched about 320 hectares in the area.

The suspect, previously convicted in 2020 for a dangerous‑means arson offence, is scheduled to appear before the court on 27 August. A psychiatric assessment has been ordered to evaluate his mental state before trial. Authorities are also investigating a second man who was earlier detained on suspicion of involvement in multiple fire start‑offs in the department. The incident occurs amid an intense heatwave and worsening drought that have driven a wave of wildfires across southern France.
