Apple to change app data consent rules in the EU

Apple has agreed to modify its App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework across most European Union countries following a multi-year investigation by Germany's Federal Cartel Office. The regulator found that Apple's existing consent prompts potentially breached competition rules by favoring its own applications over third-party developers through non-neutral design and language.

Under the new commitments, which will be monitored by a trustee for seven years, Apple must redesign consent pop-ups to be visually and linguistically neutral. This includes removing discouraging symbols and the specific word 'Tracking' from the selection page. Additionally, third-party developers will gain more flexibility to combine Apple's required consent request with their own data-protection prompts. App developers will also be permitted to re-request user consent for tracking activities after a period of one year.

Apple has four months to implement these changes. The decision follows previous regulatory actions in France and Italy, which resulted in significant fines against the company regarding its tracking framework.
