Hualien Fire Bureau investigates suspicious death of rescue dog Wilson

The Hualien County Fire Bureau is facing intense scrutiny following allegations regarding the death of Wilson, a Jack Russell Terrier search and rescue dog that gained fame for locating victims during the April 3 earthquake. While the Bureau maintains that Wilson died last year after accidentally falling from a third-floor building during training, whistleblowers and online critics have alleged that the death was not an accident and have accused officials of a cover-up.

In response to the controversy, the Hualien County Council has scheduled a special report for August 31. The investigation will demand detailed records of the incident, medical data, investigation procedures, and findings regarding recent allegations of misconduct. Local council members have called for transparency to ensure accountability and to protect the morale of frontline firefighters.

Fire Bureau Chief Wu Zhao-yuan has denied allegations of animal abuse, citing skeletal examinations conducted via hydration methods which showed no signs of fractures or trauma consistent with abuse. He noted that the handler involved was reassigned and is receiving mental health treatment. The Bureau has also implemented new safety protocols, including the removal of high-altitude training exercises and relocating staff dormitories to the ground floor.
