Huasca de Ocampo marks 25 years as Mexico’s first Pueblo Mágico
Huasca de Ocampo, located in Hidalgo, marks the 25th anniversary of being named Mexico’s first ‘Pueblo Mágico’ (Magical Town). Since the program's inception on October 5, 2001, the designation has expanded to 177 destinations across the country, aimed at promoting locations with significant historical, cultural, and natural heritage.
The program has fostered a vast economic ecosystem including hotels, restaurants, artisans, and tour operators. According to the Secretaría de Turismo (Sectur), the Pueblos Mágicos network generated 35,275 million pesos in 2025, representing a 3.7% increase from the previous year. Between January and July 2026, revenue reached 20,795 million pesos.
Huasca de Ocampo is noted for its natural attractions, such as the Prismas Basálticos—basalt columns measuring 30 to 40 meters in height—and the Peña del Aire canyon. Sectur has announced a new phase for the program, which includes an evaluation of all 177 destinations between October and November 2026 to identify areas for improvement and development.
