Niebla fire in Huelva declared extinguished after burning 33,000 hectares
The Niebla fire in Huelva, Andalusia, has been officially declared extinguished by the Andalusian Forest Fire Extinction Service (Infoca) after 15 days of activity. The blaze, which began on August 6 in the Raboconejo area, burned approximately 33,000 hectares across eleven municipalities.
This incident is considered the largest environmental disaster in the history of Andalusia, surpassing the previous record set in 2004. The fire's perimeter reached approximately 210 kilometers. Among the most significant ecological impacts is the destruction of roughly 80% of the La Pata del Caballo natural park, a vital ecological corridor.
Extinction efforts were complicated by shifting winds, difficult terrain, high fuel loads, thermal inversion, and convective phenomena. The emergency required the mobilization of hundreds of professionals, including the Military Emergencies Unit (UME), and led to the evacuation of over 700 people from various villages in Huelva and Seville. The regional government is currently working toward declaring a natural catastrophe to facilitate aid for the affected agricultural and livestock sectors.
