Huila birdwatching efforts lead to new species discoveries

The department of Huila, Colombia, is seeing a rise in biodiversity awareness through birdwatching, which has turned local rice fields into vital temporary habitats for migratory birds. This activity is fostering social cohesion and providing essential data for conservation efforts across various municipalities.

Two new bird species have recently been recorded in the region, bringing the total number of identified species in Huila to 760. The first is the hummingbird Lesbia victoriae, discovered in the Páramo de las Oseras in the municipality of Colombia. The second is the swift Chaetura meridionalis, identified in the El Juncal rice fields in Palermo. This sighting marks the first record of the species in Huila and only the second in Colombia to have photographic evidence. Experts note that these findings highlight the importance of continuous monitoring to protect the region's ecosystems.
