Environmental conservation and biodiversity in Huila

Overview

In late August 2026, the department of Huila, Colombia, hosted Environmental Week under the theme ‘Climate action: local responses to the global challenge’. The event spanned eight municipalities, including Neiva, Pitalito, and San Agustín, and featured workshops, festivals, and forums focused on environmental education and climate change responses.

Following the event, biodiversity monitoring efforts in the region have yielded significant results. Birdwatching activities have contributed to the identification of two new species in Huila: the hummingbird Lesbia victoriae in the Páramo de las Oseras and the swift Chaetura meridionalis in the El Juncal rice fields. These discoveries bring the total number of identified bird species in the department to 760.
