Humahuaca families struggle to rebuild after devastating house fire

A family in the Quebrada La Cancha neighborhood of Humahuaca, Argentina, is facing severe hardship following a house fire on August 27. The blaze, believed to have been caused by an accidentally left-on heater in a child's bedroom, destroyed clothing, furniture, and essential household items. While no injuries were reported, the victims are struggling to rebuild.

Although the local government and municipality provided some basic construction materials and promised state aid for a new room, residents are responsible for providing their own labor. This has created a significant barrier for families lacking the financial means to hire builders or the technical skills and tools required for construction.

Living conditions have deteriorated further following the removal of chemical toilets, leaving children and the elderly without basic sanitation. Families are currently facing harsh environmental conditions, including wind and ash, and have reported instances of theft involving donated goods.
