Residential fires and displacement in South and Central Am
Overview
Residential fires in Paraguay, Peru, Argentina, and Nicaragua have left multiple families displaced and facing significant hardship.
In late August, fires in Asunción, Paraguay, and the Asociación 11 de Junio in Peru destroyed homes and essential belongings, including clothing, furniture, and school supplies. In Paraguay, a blaze caused by welding work resulted in one hospitalization for burns, while the Peruvian incident left families without resources to replace basic items.
In Humahuaca, Argentina, a fire on August 27—believed to have been caused by a heater left on in a child’s bedroom—destroyed clothing and furniture. While the local government provided some construction materials and promised aid for a new room, families face significant barriers because they must provide their own labor. Living conditions have deteriorated due to the removal of chemical toilets, leaving children and the elderly without sanitation, while residents also report harsh weather and the theft of donated goods.
In Monte Comán, San Rafael, Argentina, a separate fire destroyed the home of María Rosa Cuellar and three children, resulting in the loss of all belongings. A local artist is currently coordinating a collection of clothing, blankets, and kitchen supplies to assist them. Additionally, in Estelí, Nicaragua, a fire spreading from a neighboring wooden house destroyed two homes, leaving Nohelia María Bellorín and her 13-year-old son without shelter and in need of basic necessities such as a stove and food.
