East Nusa Tenggara earthquake relief efforts intensify

Following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on August 15, 2026, which has claimed 70 lives and injured 1,182 people, large-scale relief efforts are underway across Flores and Nagekeo.

The Indonesian government has deployed six aircraft, including C-130J Super Hercules and Airbus A400M models, to expedite logistics. By the fifth day of the emergency response, 253 tons of aid, including food, water, and medical supplies, have been dispatched. The NTT Provincial Government reported receiving Rp4.359 billion in disaster relief funds from various regional governments and the public.

Various organizations are contributing to the recovery. Danantara Indonesia has collected Rp2.16 billion in donations, while the Association of All Indonesian Provincial Governments (APPSI) provided Rp150 million in aid. Corporate entities like Pegadaian are also distributing essential supplies such as tents, blankets, and sanitation kits.

To ensure immediate access to necessities, NTT Governor Melki Laka Lena issued a circular allowing earthquake victims to obtain basic goods from local shops on credit, with the provincial government promising to settle the costs later. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transportation is optimizing ferry and bus services to maintain connectivity and aid distribution in isolated areas.
