Human remains discovered in Manhasset park

Human skeletal remains were discovered Thursday evening in a remote, wooded area of Plandome Pond Park in Manhasset. The remains were found by members of a high school track team running near the train tracks shortly before 6 p.m.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder stated that investigators believe the remains may belong to an elderly woman with cognitive issues who went missing in the area last December. While the remains have not been positively identified, police noted that “a lot of positive identifiers” suggest this connection.

The discovery occurred approximately four miles from where the woman was last seen during an extensive search involving helicopters and K-9 units. Authorities indicated that the discovery is not believed to be criminal in nature. The Nassau County Homicide Squad is investigating, and the park remains closed to the public.
