Discovery of human remains in Manhasset park
Overview
Human skeletal remains were discovered by a high school track team in a wooded area of Plandome Pond Park in Manhasset. Nassau County Police initially stated that the remains might belong to an elderly woman with cognitive issues who went missing in the area the previous December, noting that “a lot of positive identifiers” suggested this connection.
As the investigation progressed, authorities identified the likely individual as Shi Hua Xu, a 79-year-old woman with dementia who disappeared from Great Neck in December 2025. While forensic specialists await DNA testing for definitive confirmation, the family has identified a piece of clothing found at the scene as belonging to Xu. Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder indicated that the discovery is not believed to be criminal in nature.
