Human rights groups report widespread enforced disappearances globally
On the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, human rights organizations across multiple regions reported widespread cases of enforced disappearances and called for international accountability.
In Gaza, prisoner organizations report that Israeli forces have used enforced disappearance as a systematic policy for three consecutive years. The Palestinian Ministry of Justice has recorded over 11,200 Palestinians as missing or forcibly disappeared since October 2023, with between 2,500 and 3,000 specifically meeting the definition of enforced disappearance. Meanwhile, Hamas has condemned recent Israeli military operations in Gaza as violations of existing ceasefire agreements.
In Balochistan, Pakistan, the Human Rights Council of Balochistan documented 9,130 cases of enforced disappearance between January 2016 and July 2026. The Baloch Students Organisation-Azad reported that more than 800 people were forcibly disappeared during the first half of 2026. Protesters in the UK and Islamabad have demanded that Pakistan ratify the UN convention on enforced disappearances.
In Western Sahara, the Sahrawi National Human Rights Commission (CONASADH) reported that over 400 Sahrawis remain missing and called for investigations into Moroccan authorities. Additionally, Syria's National Commission for Missing Persons launched the Athar platform to create a national registry to help families locate missing relatives lost during the Syrian conflict.
