Global reports of enforced disappearances

Overview

On the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, human rights organizations have raised alarms regarding systemic disappearance patterns across multiple regions.

In Gaza, the Palestinian Ministry of Justice and prisoner advocacy groups report that over 11,200 Palestinians have been recorded as missing or forcibly disappeared since October 2023, including more than 4,700 women and children. Prisoner organizations state that Israeli forces have utilized enforced disappearance as a “systematic policy” for three consecutive years. The Palestinian Center for Missing and Forcibly Disappeared Persons estimates that between 2,500 and 3,000 individuals have been subjected to enforced disappearance.

In Balochistan, the Human Rights Council of Balochistan (HRCB) documented 9,130 cases of enforced disappearance between January 2016 and July 2026. The Baloch Students Organisation-Azad (BSO-Azad) reported that more than 800 people—including students, activists, and professionals—were forcibly disappeared during the first half of 2026 alone. Protesters in Islamabad and the UK have demanded that Pakistan ratify the UN convention on enforced disappearances.

In Bahrain, the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) has called for authorities to disclose the whereabouts of disappeared persons amid reports of mass arrests and torture. One specific case involves Sayed Mohamed Al-Mosawi, who died in custody following a beating.

In Western Sahara, the Sahrawi National Human Rights Commission (CONASADH) reported that over 400 Sahrawis remain missing, calling for investigations into Moroccan authorities. Additionally, Syria’s National Commission for Missing Persons launched the Athar platform to establish a national registry to assist families in locating relatives lost during the Syrian conflict.
