Aid worker Mohammed al‑Wahidi killed in Israeli strike in Gaza
Mohammed al‑Wahidi, a senior official of the Egyptian Relief Committee operating in Gaza, coordinated emergency food distribution and organised large public screens so displaced families could watch FIFA World Cup matches, including the Egypt‑Argentina round‑of‑16 game.
On 7 July, an Israeli missile struck the taxi he was travelling in through the Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City, killing al‑Wahidi, the driver and two boys aged eight and ten who were passing nearby. Israel said the strike was aimed at a Hamas operative and that an investigation would be opened.
His death adds to a UN tally of at least 593 humanitarian workers killed since the war began. Activist Mohammed Hmeid described him as “a door to hope that opened every day for displaced people”. The incident underscores the heightened danger faced by aid personnel in the conflict.
