Gaza ceasefire marks one year of ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis

One year after the United States-backed ceasefire was implemented in the Gaza Strip, humanitarian organizations and local officials report that the agreement exists ‘in name only.’ Despite the truce, Israeli military operations continue, resulting in ongoing casualties and destruction. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reports that since the start of the conflict in October 2023, at least 74,370 Palestinians have been killed and 175,371 injured.

The humanitarian situation remains critical. Reports indicate that 466 Palestinians have died from malnutrition since 2024, including 157 children. The healthcare system is severely compromised, with 19 of the 38 hospitals in Gaza currently out of service and the remaining 19 only partially operational. Furthermore, over 90 percent of the territory's infrastructure has reportedly been targeted using AI-assisted technology.

Politically, the Gaza Board of Peace, recognized by a UN Security Council resolution as a transitional administration, has faced criticism for its inability to enforce a lasting peace or facilitate reconstruction. While Israel maintains that its targeted strikes aim to weaken Hamas, the conflict has led to widespread displacement and a deepening humanitarian crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people facing acute food insecurity.
