Beijing humanoid robot crashes during high-speed test

During the World Robot Conference in Beijing, a humanoid robot experienced a high-profile failure during a speed test. The robot failed to decelerate after crossing the finish line, resulting in a violent collision with protective barriers. The impact caused the machine to fall backward, triggering sparks and electrical malfunctions near its waist area.

Despite the viral footage of the accident, the event highlighted rapid advancements in the field. The Chinese robot ‘Tian Kong’, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, reportedly completed a 100-meter sprint in 9.39 seconds, surpassing Usain Bolt’s world record.

Organizers noted that the industry is shifting toward full autonomy in tasks like running and football. While some challenges in dynamic stability remain, China continues to lead in industrial deployment, with significant investments expected to drive the humanoid robot market toward a multi-trillion dollar valuation by 2050.
