Brazil Senate races: Humberto Costa and Jaques Wagner announce new substitute candidates

In Pernambuco, the Federação Brasil da Esperança – a coalition of the PT, PCdoB and PV – officially endorsed João Campos (PSB) for governor and confirmed Senator Humberto Costa (PT) as its Senate candidate for re‑election. The coalition also named former union leader Luciano Bivar (MDB), who helped secure Sergio Moro’s 2022 candidacy, as Costa’s first substitute.

In Bahia, Senator Jaques Wagner (PT) announced that former Salvador mayor Edvaldo Brito (PSD) will be his first substitute on the Senate ticket for the October elections. Wagner noted the appointment aligns with the state government and the PT‑PSD alliance; the second substitute position remains open.

Both announcements reflect broader party coordination ahead of Brazil’s 2026 general elections, with the PT and allied groups consolidating support for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s agenda and regional candidacies.
