Hummingbird species and migratory patterns in North America

Hummingbirds in North America exhibit diverse behaviors and migratory patterns. The Rufous hummingbird is noted for its extreme aggression and territoriality, often driving away other species to protect food sources. Despite their small size, weighing only 3 to 4 grams, they perform one of the longest migrations of any bird, traveling over 4,000 miles between wintering grounds in Mexico and breeding territories in British Columbia and Alaska.

In Florida, the Ruby-throated hummingbird is a common summer visitor, while the Rufous and Black-chinned species are typically seen during the winter. These birds require high-energy nectar and small insects for protein. To support them, gardeners are encouraged to provide feeders with a 1:4 sugar-to-water solution, maintained with regular cleaning, or to plant native species with red, orange, or pink tubular flowers that bloom from spring through fall.
