North American hummingbird migration patterns

Hummingbird migration across North America typically begins in late July or August, starting in southern Canada and the northeastern United States. Species such as the Ruby-throated Hummingbird often migrate toward wintering grounds in Mexico and Central America, though some species may remain in certain regions year-round.

Different species exhibit varied migratory behaviors. The Rufous hummingbird is noted for extreme aggression and territoriality, often driving away other species to protect food sources. Despite weighing only 3 to 4 grams, they perform migrations of over 4,000 miles between Mexico and breeding territories in Alaska and British Columbia. In Florida, the Ruby-throated hummingbird is a common summer visitor, while the Rufous and Black-chinned species are typically seen during the winter.

As of early September, the fall migration of Ruby-throated hummingbirds is underway in regions including the Hudson Valley in the Northeast and the Ark-La-Tex region in Louisiana. To support these birds, experts recommend providing high-energy nectar through feeders containing a 1:4 white sugar-to-water solution. The LSU AgCenter warns against using brown sugar, honey, or artificial sweeteners, as these can harm the birds. Feeders should be cleaned thoroughly and nectar changed every one to three days to prevent spoilage.

While the Cornell Lab of Ornithology notes that providing feeders will not prevent hummingbirds from migrating, it offers a vital energy source for the journey. Gardeners are encouraged to plant native tubular flowers in red, orange, or pink and to keep feeders active for several weeks after the last sightings to support late stragglers.
