Humpback whale autopsy reveals fatal bacterial infection
Researchers at the German Oceanographic Museum in Stralsund have released autopsy results for a humpback whale found dead in the Greifswalder Bodden near Rügen. The whale, which measured approximately ten meters in length and weighed seven tons, likely died from a severe bacterial infection.
During the necropsy, experts discovered four abscesses, including one located on the spine that measured 110 centimeters in length. Marine biologist Lisa Klemens noted that the animal likely experienced extreme pain, particularly during movement. While a definitive cause of death, such as sepsis, is still being investigated through laboratory tests, the presence of these abscesses is a primary finding.
Animal welfare organization ‘Stranded No More’ has suggested the infection may have been treatable and raised concerns regarding potential neglect. While skin characteristics suggest this is the same whale previously sighted near Kiel, Wismar, and Międzyzdroje, official identification is still pending.
