Humpback whale health and mortality incidents

Overview

Reports have emerged regarding the health and mortality of humpback whales in different regions. In Oregon, a humpback whale suffered life-threatening jaw injuries after becoming entangled in abandoned fishing nets near Newport. Although a rescue team successfully freed the animal, its survival was deemed unlikely because the damage prevented it from closing its mouth to feed.

In a separate incident in the Baltic Sea, researchers conducted an autopsy on a ten-meter humpback whale found dead near Rügen. The necropsy revealed severe bacterial infections and abscesses, including one on the spine measuring 110 centimeters. Marine biologist Lisa Klemens noted the animal likely experienced extreme pain, and investigations continue to determine if sepsis was the definitive cause of death.
