Hungarian artist drMáriás satirizes politics as new book examines Kádár‑era music control

Contemporary Hungarian artist drMáriás (Béla Máriás) marked his 40‑year career with a recent exhibition at the Godot Contemporary Art Institute, featuring satirical portraits of politicians such as Viktor Orbán and Péter Magyar. The show combines painting, performance and AI‑generated video, reflecting his exile from the Balkans after the 1991 Yugoslav wars and his long‑standing critique of authoritarian rule.

Journalist Mező Gábor released the book A szárnyszegő, which investigates the life of Erdős Péter and the cultural politics of Hungary’s Kádár regime. Drawing on archival documents, the work shows how the state manipulated the music industry—controlling record releases, tour permits and radio play—through informal networks rather than overt force. The study offers a broader look at how dictatorships shape artistic careers and cultural expression.
