Magyar Nemzeti Bank cuts base interest rate to 5.5%

The Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) has reduced its base interest rate to 5.5%, marking the third consecutive 25 basis point cut in a summer cycle initiated by Governor Mihály Varga. This decision follows a significant drop in annual inflation, which reached a low of 1.2% in July, well below the central bank's target range. This rate is at its lowest level since May 2022.

Despite the downward trend in central bank rates, several commercial banks continue to offer attractive deposit rates that significantly exceed current inflation levels. For instance, Trive Bank offers 7.5% for 12-month deposits, and Gránit Bank provides between 7% and 8% for 3-month terms. These rates offer substantial real returns for savers in the current economic environment.

Market analysts are now looking toward September for the next potential move, as the MNB is expected to release its quarterly inflation report. While the recent cuts conclude the planned three-month easing period, investors remain focused on whether the central bank will continue its dovish path or pause to assess the impact of the lower rates on the forint and broader economic stability.
