Hungarian BUX index reaches record high as OTP, Telekom and Mol surge
The Budapest Stock Exchange's BUX index closed at a historic 1,372.51 points on Thursday, up 0.95% from the previous close and marking a new peak. Trading volume reached 20.8 billion forints, reflecting strong investor sentiment that mirrored international markets.
Leading blue‑chip stocks drove the rally. OTP Bank rose 1.41% to 46,890 forints with a turnover of 13.8 billion, while Magyar Telekom gained 0.81% to 2,750 forints on 1.3 billion of trades. Mol Plc advanced 0.27% to 4,500 forints, trading 3.1 billion forints and touching its historic maximum. Analysts highlighted target‑price upgrades for OTP and Telekom and noted Mol's recent $720 million acquisition of a Cypriot offshore gas field as a catalyst.
The market outlook will be shaped by upcoming second‑quarter earnings reports from OTP, Magyar Telekom, Mol and Richter, which could confirm whether the current optimism is sustainable.
