Hungarian committee summons Mihály Varga and György Matolcsy
A Hungarian parliamentary inquiry committee investigating alleged abuses at the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) has voted to summon Mihály Varga and former central bank governor György Matolcsy for hearings. The committee, led by Attila Csőszi, plans to conduct these hearings over several sessions starting in approximately three to four weeks.
Mihály Varga, who has served as both Minister of Finance and Minister of National Economy, confirmed via social media that he will appear personally to assist in clarifying matters related to the former MNB leadership. He noted that the new management of the central bank filed a report in April 2025 regarding the MNB Foundation, followed by three additional reports concerning other matters. Varga stated that they are providing 30,000 pages of documentation to aid the investigation.
The inquiry follows investigations by the National Investigation Bureau, which suspects Matolcsy and six others of official misconduct. The committee also voted to request data from the Pallas Athéné Domus Meriti Foundation. Previous sessions included testimony from former Fidesz representatives Erik Bánki and Lajos Kósa regarding legislation that was later rejected by the Constitutional Court.
