Investigation into Magyar Nemzeti Bank leadership

Overview

The National Investigation Bureau (NNI) launched an investigation into alleged misuse of official authority by former Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) Governor György Matolcsy and six others. The probe examines claims that MNB officials used threats of ‘extremely strict and unpleasant’ supervisory measures against Erste Bank in 2023 to force the resignation of former MNB Governor András Simor from the bank’s supervisory board.

Matolcsy has denied the allegations, describing them as a ‘false tale’ and stating he had no knowledge of any instructions to pressure the bank.

Following the NNI investigation, a Hungarian parliamentary inquiry committee has voted to summon Matolcsy and Minister Mihály Varga for hearings. The committee is reviewing extensive documentation, including 30,000 pages of records, and has requested data regarding the Pallas Athéné Domus Meriti Foundation as part of its inquiry into the former MNB leadership.
