Hungarian economic growth requires structural shift toward SMEs

Discussions regarding the Hungarian economy highlight the need for structural shifts to ensure long-term growth. Experts suggest that the current model, which relies heavily on attracting large industrial manufacturers and extensive capital and labor expansion, is reaching its limits.

To avoid economic stagnation, analysts propose a transition toward a more diversified structure centered on a robust small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector and a flourishing service industry. This approach is modeled after regional neighbors like Poland and Lithuania, which have seen more dynamic development through increased productivity and service sector efficiency.

Challenges facing Hungarian entrepreneurs include a lack of trust in the business environment and the tendency for success to be driven by political or business connections rather than merit, knowledge, and performance. Additionally, many startups face failure due to inadequate financial planning, such as failing to account for operational costs or personal labor value, and a lack of clear communication regarding growth goals and values.
