Hungarian economic structural transition

Overview

Discussions regarding the Hungarian economy have focused on the necessity of a structural shift to ensure long-term growth. Analysts suggest that the existing model, which relies on attracting large industrial manufacturers and extensive capital and labor expansion, is reaching its limits. To avoid stagnation, experts propose transitioning toward a diversified structure centered on a robust small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector and a flourishing service industry, similar to models seen in Poland and Lithuania.

At the GKI 2030 conference, officials and experts further detailed the need for a transition toward a knowledge-based economy characterized by higher added value and increased domestic production. This comes as investment volume has reportedly decreased by approximately 30 percent over the last four years. Recent discussions at the conference also touched upon fiscal consolidation, with projections suggesting a path toward meeting Maastricht criteria for euro adoption by 2030, despite potential inflation spikes anticipated in 2027.

Additional economic concerns include energy security, with Hungary facing an energy import dependency of nearly 80 percent, cited as the highest in Europe. Plans for an 8-gigawatt wind farm project are being targeted for completion between 2040 and 2050 to mitigate this. Meanwhile, the Hungarian National Bank has announced a reduction of its medium-term inflation target to 2.5 percent, effective January 2028, to foster a more predictable environment.
