Hungarian ex‑minister Nagy Márton’s luxury hotel costs disclosed

A court ruling forced the Hungarian Ministry of Finance to release detailed expense data for former minister Nagy Márton’s foreign missions. Between October 2024 and July 2025 he made twelve trips abroad, four of which were to Brussels. On most occasions he was housed in the five‑star Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp, a hotel 40‑50 minutes from Brussels, where nightly rates averaged ≈ 831,000 HUF (≈ 3.3 million HUF for a four‑night stay) and later 425,000 HUF per night for a two‑night booking.

Other stays included the Juliana Hotel in Brussels, the Courtyard by Marriott Brussels EU and the Corinthia Grand Hotel Astoria, with nightly costs ranging from ≈ 521,000 HUF to ≈ 721,000 HUF. The report also listed stays in Vienna, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sofia, Luxembourg and Beijing, each at comparable luxury‑hotel rates. The disclosures revealed that the ministry had not previously supplied the specific hotel names despite public‑interest requests.

The data highlight the scale of public‑funded travel expenses for a senior official and sparked debate over the transparency of ministerial spending.
