Hungarian farmers vote to suspend JÉGER hail‑protection system
A nationwide survey of 5,000 Hungarian farmers found that 66.1% support suspending the JÉGER hail‑mitigation system, while 24.5% favour keeping it operational. Agriculture Minister Bóna Szabolcs announced that the system will be shut down in every county where a majority of farmers voted for suspension, and will continue only in counties where a majority supports it – namely Vas, Somogy, Baranya and Zala. In the counties where JÉGER remains active, the trigger threshold for activation has been tightened: generators will be started only if the Hungaromet forecast indicates at least an 80 % probability of hail, up from the previous 50–60 % level. The minister stressed that the decision is not a scientific judgment on whether JÉGER causes drought, and that an independent scientific panel will study the system’s environmental and agricultural impacts. The announcement was made via the minister’s Facebook post.
