Hungarian government announces housing permit suspensions and Danube defense projects

The Hungarian government has announced several major infrastructure and housing policy shifts. Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy announced a suspension of construction permits for housing projects designated as priority investments under the Otthon Start Program until the end of December. This review aims to ensure projects align with local infrastructure and public interest, following criticisms that previous developments bypassed local regulations and favored specific contractors.

Additionally, the government has ordered the immediate commencement of construction for a bottom sill on the Danube between the Paks Nuclear Power Plant and Dunaszentbenedek to manage water levels. This priority project includes the potential sinking of two 80-meter barges to raise the river level. To support drought and water shortage mitigation, 6.2 billion forints have been allocated to the Ministry for Living Environment and Responsibility for Environmental Protection.

Other announced measures include the launch of a new housing program, the revival of the Diákváros program, and a commitment to maintaining all European Union funding.
