Hungarian Prime Minister Magyar Péter launches major rural development and railway programmes

Prime Minister Magyar Péter announced a series of high‑profile government initiatives. The cabinet began detailed discussions on the Szent István Rural Development Program, which will allocate up to one billion forint to each of ten selected villages and involve experimental projects in twenty communities. At the same time, the Baross Gábor railway programme was unveiled, promising extensive track reconstruction, electrification, new rolling‑stock procurement and tram‑train networks, largely financed from released EU funds.

Environmental experts warned that Hungary’s inland water habitats are collapsing. Schell Gergely reported near‑total loss of wetlands in the Hajta, Galga, Zagyva and Tápió basins, urging a systemic response. In Szeged, a city‑wide interactive map under the COOL Life and ReGreenX projects helps residents monitor and protect newly planted urban trees, aiming to mitigate extreme heat‑island effects.

The announcements also include a 30‑day public safety campaign in Budapest, new consumer‑protection labelling rules, asbestos remediation in Szombathely and a push for AI and satellite programmes under EU cooperation.
