Hungarian state to take over MCC and major foundations
The Hungarian government will take over the assets and responsibilities of several major foundations, including the Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC), the Batthyány Lajos Foundation, and the Blue Planet Climate Protection Foundation, effective August 31. This move effectively ends their current status as public interest asset managers.
Péter Magyar announced that while these organizations may continue their work in different forms, they will lose their special legal status, state financing, and control over state-held assets. Financial figures cited include the Batthyány Lajos Foundation receiving approximately 66 billion HUF between 2022 and 2026, the Blue Planet Foundation receiving 25 billion HUF in the same period, and the MCC receiving over 130 billion HUF in 2020 alone.
The decision impacts various regional projects, including those in Transylvania, and threatens the stability of the MCC Brussels institute. Frank Furedi, head of the Brussels institute, noted that the branch may close in its current form if new funding sources are not identified.
